Medicare criteria for referring Sleep Studies

Are you aware you can refer a patient to have a sleep study without the need to see a physician first by following the guidelines below. Medicare guidelines require patient screening to determine if the patient can go straight to the Sleep Study without the need to see a Physician first. The patient will be automatically booked for a follow up consultation to see the Physician for the Sleep Study results and recommendations.

Direct testing may be appropriate if a patient has a high risk of Severe to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
ESS score of ≥ 8 and a score of ≥ 3 on a validated STOP BANG questionnaire.
