Sleep Medicine
Sleep Disorders are medical disorders effecting the pattern of a person’s Sleep. Some sleep disorders are serious enough to interfere with normal physical, mental, social and emotional functioning.
Some common sleep disorders include sleep apnoea (stops in breathing during sleep), narcolepsy and hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness at inappropriate times), cataplexy (sudden and transient loss of muscle tone while awake), and insomnia.
Respiratory Medicine
Respiratory medicine is a medical speciality that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract.
Respiratory medicine is considered a branch of internal medicine, and is related to intensive care medicine. It often involves managing patients who need life support and mechanical ventilation.
Sleep Apnoea Therapy
People who have Sleep Apnoea have problems with keeping the airway open for normal breathing as they sleep. Most commonly, the soft tissue in the throat and oral cavity (the tonsils or tongue, for instance) relaxes and/or collapses, closing off the space needed for air to move through the nose and into the lungs.
Southern Respiratory & Sleep Specialists have a fully equipped CPAP facility onsite to assist patients who require a CPAP trial after diagnosis. Our experienced CPAP Consultants guide and support our patients during their introduction to CPAP to ensure the patient achieves maximum benefit from their therapy and ongoing monitoring.
